Kyushu trip

Oct. 14, Fri.                LEAVE LOS ANGELES
Cross the International Date Line, arriving in Tokyo, the next day.

Oct. 15, Sat.               ARRIVE TOKYO/NARITA – FUKUOKA
On arrival at Tokyo, proceed through immigration and customs,  then to our domestic flight to Fukuoka.

Oct. 16, Sun.  FUKUOKA
Our morning tour of the city includes Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, dedicated to Michizane Sugawara, the God of Learning.   (B L)

Oct. 17, Mon.   FUKUOKA – YAME – MT. ASO – KUMAMOTO
Travel by chartered bus to the historic old town of Yame, known for its green tea and traditional crafts. Continue to Mt. Aso, Japan’s largest active volcano.   Arrive in Kumamoto in the late afternoon. (B D)

Kumamoto castle

Oct. 18, Tue.   KUMAMOTO
This morning, visit Suizenji Park, with miniature landscapes of views seen on the old Tokaido Road.  Continue to the fortified Kumamoto Castle, one of the three premier castles of Japan.   (B)

Oct. 19, Wed.     KUMAMOTO –  KAGOSHIMA
Travel by coach to Kagoshima Prefecture.  Visit Sengan-en (Iso Koen Park), a Japanese-style landscape garden, featuring Sakurajima as its background mountain, and Sakurajima, an active volcano and the symbol of Kagoshima. (B D)

Oct. 20, Thu.     KAGOSHIMA
Visit nearby Chiran, the town of kamikazes.  We will visit the Chiran Peace Museum for Kamikaze Pilots and Chiran Samurai residences.  Balance of the day is free.  (B)

Hiroshima sightseeing

Oct. 21, Fri.                KAGOSHIMA – HIROSHIMA
Morning train ride to Hiroshima.  On arrival, visit the Peace Memorial Park and Museum.  (B L)

Kintai-kyo Bridge

Oct. 22, Sat.  HIROSHIMA – MIYAJIMA
Morning tour to Iwakuni, site of Kintai-kyo Bridge, a uniquely-shaped wooden bridge with five arches atop massive stone pillars.  Board a ferry to the islet of Miyajima, one of the three most scenic sites of Japan, to see the Itsukushima Shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. (B L)

Kyoto – Japan’s ancient capital

Oct. 23, Sun.   HIROSHIMA – KYOTO
Travel to Kyoto by bullet train, then enjoy our city tour of Kyoto, visiting Sanjusangendo, Kinkajkuji (Golden Pavilion) and Nijo Castle.  (B D)

Oct. 24, Mon.   KYOTO
All day free for independent activities.  An optional tour to Nara is available.  (B)

Lake Ashinoko in Hakone

Oct. 25, Tue.    KYOTO – HAKONE
Travel by train to Odawara, then continue to our hotel in Miyanoshita. Weather permitting, take a boat ride on Lake Hakone and a cable car ride for a great view of the area.  (B-D)

Take a chartered bus to Tokyo to visit the Meiji Shrine, Nijubashi, the Asakusa Temple and Nakamise shopping arcade. (B L)

Oct 28, Fri.   HOMEWARD BOUND
A free morning for last minute sightseeing or shopping.  Transfer provided to the airport for your flight home. (B)
